E-reader cover

For my birthday, I got an e-reader from my hubby. So I added to my sewing list: Make an e-reader cover. But that list is pretty long. And I hadn’t gotten round to it yet. In the meantime, I used the little insulation thingy it came in. I thought that would be enough for now.
It wasn’t. A couple of months later (yes, I know, I should have made the cover in that time, but life happened), my e-reader suddenly looked like this:
Not too healthy, no. Reason? No idea. Wrong place in my bag at the wrong time? Bumped into something? I don’t know. What I do know in the meantime, is that Sony doesn’t cover this in its guarantee policy. No repair service. And you know what’s really stupid? The thing still works. I just can’t read the upper part of my book. And only reading 2/3 of your books, not handy. But I was told that having it repaired would cost me more than just buying a new one. Isn’t that sad? Talk about a consumer society. And did I give in? Yes… But I’m not as big a fan of Sony anymore as I used to be.
So I bought a new one. Two actually, since it was hubby’s birthday. Sony again. So far for making a statement, I know. This time, nobody was allowed to read outside the house before both things had a cover. And this time, I got going immediately.
I based the pattern on the i-cover pattern from Eva Maria. I changed the measurements as follows:
  • Cardboard: e-reader measurements + 1 cm (height and width)
  • Fabric: e-reader measurements + 2 cm (height and width)
Other alterations:
  • I sewed in an extra piece for my stylus
  • For the top corners, I didn’t use elastics, but I made fabric corners
  • For my hubby’s cover, I glued magnetic foil on the cardboard. This way, he doesn’t have to close the cover with elastics, but it closes itself
  • I also added some padding. Precautions.
Meanwhile, both of us are into heavily protected reading. But why are there 3 finished covers in the picture? Well, after my hubby had showed off his new present at work, he came home asking me whether I could make another one for his colleague. So I did. And I’ll be making a fourth one soon enough. Since we’re getting a tablet for subscribing to the newspaper, woot!
